The "Gift" in Giving

I'm sitting on the couch watching Oprah... catching up on DVR shows and working on home school lessons. Today's show in particular is about big surprises that Oprah has been able to give a variety of people throughout the years. It's amazing to see the reaction on the faces of people who have been given the opportunity to meet a favorite celebrity, warm up with their dream professional baseball team, own a home when they had been homeless. My personal favorite, Rwandan refuges are united with their parents that they had been separated from for 12 years.

I admit, I'm an emotional person and the tears come easily. It's so exciting for me to see these people being given so much after life circumstances had taken so much away. What an amazing feeling it is just to WATCH someone ELSE give amazing gifts to people who are so deserving. I can't help but desire to experience that amazing act of giving myself! Imagine how much sweeter it is to be the giver.

One month to live... a chance to give. I'm going to find as many opportunities to change someones life by giving! I challenge you to do the same and share your experiences with your girlfriends! We may not be able to introduce our friends to a celebrity, but I'm sure you can think of gifts that will change their outlook or change their lives! Cook a meal; clean a house; watch a child so someone can have a much needed date night. Buy a bag of groceries, drive someones child to soccer practice, or write a card telling someone how amazing they are when you don't usually take the time. Fill a tank with gas, invite someone to church, mow a lawn. The opportunities are endless.

Don't forget, Jesus said that when we do for the least of these, it's as if we're serving HIM directly! I'm anxious to hear about all the creative ways you find to give this month!

The LITTLE Things

I once heard in a sermon that "Ministry happens in the interruptions of life". It seems that when we're busy, overwhelmed, and over-loaded, someone or somebody comes along needing a helping hand. At times - we just can't imagine how this interruption could be a ministry opportunity. The writing below was sent to me by one of our girlfriends, Sheri. It was a great reminder to me that God is in control. He has a plan and purpose for all aspects of our lives and the day-to-day events that we encounter. Do we look at them as opportunities or frustrations?

As you might remember, the head of a company survived 9/11 because his son started kindergarten. Another fellow was alive because it was His turn to bring donuts. One woman was late because her Alarm clock didn't go off in time. One was late because of being stuck on the NJ Turnpike because of an auto accident. One of them Missed his bus. One spilled food on her clothes and had to take time to change. One's Car wouldn't start. One couldn't Get a taxi. The one that struck me was the man Who put on a new pair of shoes that morning, Took the various means to get to work But before he got there, he developed A blister on his foot. He stopped at a drugstore to buy a Band-Aid. That is why he is alive today.

Now when I am Stuck in traffic, miss an elevator, turn back to answer a ringing telephone ...
all the little things that annoy me, I think to myself, "This is exactly where God wants me to be at this very moment." Next time your morning seems to be going wrong , the children are slow getting dressed, you can't seem to find the car keys, you hit every traffic light, don't get mad or frustrated; It May just be that God is at work watching over you. May God continue to bless you with all those annoying little things and may you remember their possible purpose.

The Devil & The Duck

Great little story - thanks to Maria for sending it our way!

There was a little boy visiting his grandparents on their farm. He was given a slingshot to play with out in the woods. He practiced in the woods, but he could never hit the target. Getting a little discouraged, he headed back for dinner. As he was walking back he saw Grandma's pet duck. Just out of impulse, he let the slingshot fly, hit the duck square in the head and killed it. He was shocked and grieved! In a panic, he hid the dead duck in the wood pile; only to see his Sister watching! Sally had seen it all, but she said nothing. After lunch the next day Grandma said, 'Sally, let's wash the dishes', but Sally said, 'Grandma, Johnny told me he wanted to help in the kitchen. Then she whispered to him, "Remember the duck?" So Johnny did the dishes. Later that day, Grandpa asked if the children wanted to go fishing and Grandma said, "I'm sorry but I need Sally to help make supper." Sally just smiled and said, "well that's all right because Johnny told me he wanted to help?" She whispered again, "Remember the duck?" So Sally went fishing and Johnny stayed to help. After several days of Johnny doing both his chores and Sally's, he finally couldn't stand it any longer. He came to Grandma and confessed that he had killed the duck. Grandma knelt down, gave him a hug and said, "Sweetheart, I know. You see, I was standing at the window and I saw the whole thing, but because I love you, I forgave you. I was just wondering how long you would let Sally make a slave of you."

Whatever is in your past, whatever you have done - and the devil keeps throwing it up in your face (lying, cheating, debt, fear, bad habits, hatred, anger, bitterness, gossip, etc., you need to know that God was standing at the window and He saw the whole thing. He has seen your whole life. He wants you to know that He loves you and that you are forgiven. He's just wondering how long you will let the devil make a slave of you. The great thing about God is that when you ask for forgiveness, He not only forgives you, but He forgets. It is by God's grace and mercy that we are saved.

Four Questions Wives Should Ask Their Husbands

Ladies - as you read this, let me challenge you, for once, to put YOUR feelings, thoughts, or frustrations with your husband aside. Ask him these questions and allow him to be honest with you without getting defensive. There will be time for him to reciprocate later. This may be a first step of many in making huge improvements in your marriage! Think you're doing everything right? Ask him these questions anyway, you may be surprised at what you hear.

A few weeks ago I did this post about Five Questions Husbands Should Ask Their Wives that got a lot of attention…and I received a lot of communication from women and men asking, “what should wives ask their husbands?” So…I thought I would give it a shot! (Tried to think of five…but the truth is men just don’t need as much conversation as women do!) :-)

#1 - Do You Feel Admired?
Ladies, your husband wants to know that YOU think he looks good–period! AND…you should NEVER allow someone at work to tell him “that looks good on you,” or, “you look good in that shirt.” He’s YOUR husband…and YOU should do all that you can to make sure you admire him!
Trust me…there isn’t a man on this planet that doesn’t want to hear “I think you are hot/sexy/all that and a bag of chips” from the lady he most admires and desires! And ladies…you cannot take for granted–HE WANTS and NEEDS to hear this from you!

Trust me…NO ONE’S opinion matters to me more than Lucretia’s…and if she says I look good–then DANG IT…I do! What is SO dangerous is that often times men will have someone in their lives that makes them feel admired–satan will make sure of that!!! BUT…if he is getting the attention/admiration from his wife then it makes it SO much easier to lead with confidence and resist temptation that comes his way. SO…ask him…does he feel admired by you? It DOES matter to him!

#2 - Do You Feel Respected?
EVERY man wants respect! AND…every man wants to be respected by his wife. (Ladies–STOP IT…I know some of you are saying right now, “well, when he begins to be respectable then I will…”) That isn’t the point here…the question is from YOU to HIM…and it do you feel respected?

Let me give you a few insights…
His answer is going to be “no” if you are always telling your children what a loser their father is and that you wish he were a better dad to them.
His answer is going to be “no” if you are always telling your girlfriends (usually in the form of a prayer request) what a low life he is and how he drives you crazy.
His answer is going to be “no” if he has shared vulnerable thoughts and emotions with you…and you take that information and use it as a “conversation piece” with your lunch buddies!
His answer is going to be “no” if you have never taught your children to thank him for the way he provides and such.
His answer is going to be “no” if you are NEVER interested in what he is doing. (I am amazed at how many women don’t even know what their husband does at work…or what his favorite hobby is.)
One of his BIGGEST NEEDS is to feel respected…and the person he needs it from the most is his wife!
So…ask him.

#3 - Do You Feel Taken Care Of?
Every man, from time to time, wants to be able to come home and relax for a few minutes…to take off his shoes and just sit down. BUT…when a wife stands at the door and barks out orders before the garage door closes…a man feels pressured and pressed down…and honestly begins to think, “I should have stayed at work…at least there I get treated like I am somebody!”

This does not negate the fact he needs to show up and serve…but from time to time…give him a break when he hits the door and let him catch his breath. Trust me…this is HUGE!

#4 - Is Our Sex Life Fulfilling To You?
Anytime “men” are discussed in marriage you just KNOW that SEX is going to be a topic of discussion!
BTW…if you don’t want to ask this question…you probably already know the answer!
In every survey that I’ve ever read sex is ranked #1 by men in regards to what they need (I think breathing is #2!)

Men want to know that their wife wants them…sexually. Believe me…it DOES matter to him. And ladies…just the fact that you take the time to ask this question will mean more to him than you could ever imagine.
AND…the ONLY way this area of a marriage will get better is if couples are willing to talk about it. My gosh…YOU’RE MARRIED!

If their has been pain and disappointment in the past–that needs to be talked about. If their have been unmet expectations on your part…then that needs to be talked about. YES, I know it “takes two to tango…” BUT…
The purpose of this question is for you to ask does he feel taken care of in this area. I KNOW this can be SO uncomfortable for so many couples right now…but you can either deal with it now…OR you WILL deal with it later.
Uncomfortable conversations must take place at times in order for a marriage to achieve its maximum potential!

So…ladies…there you go.

Slumdog Women

If you're following our new sermon series you know that Jeff has been talking about "Slumdog Disciples". This email Maria sent to me just seemed to really emphasize Jeff's sermon point - "Blessed are the poor in spirit":

Women have strengths that amaze men.

They bear hardships and they carry burdens, but they hold happiness, love and joy.

They smile when they want to scream.

They sing when they want to cry.

They cry when they are happy and laugh when they are nervous.

They fight for what they believe in.

They stand up to injustice.

They don't take "no" for an answer when they believe there is a better solution.

They go without so their family can have.

They go to the doctor with a frightened friend.

They love unconditionally.

They cry when their children excel and cheer when their friends get awards.

They are happy when they hear about a birth or a wedding.

Their hearts break when a friend dies.

They grieve at the loss of a family member, yet they are strong when they think there is no strength left.

They know that a hug and a kiss can heal a broken heart.

Women come in all shapes, sizes and colors.

They'll drive, fly, walk, run or e-mail you to show how much they care about you.

The heart of a woman is what makes the world keep turning.

They bring joy, hope and love.

They have compassion and ideas.

They give moral support to their family and friends.

Women have vital things to say and everything to give.

HOWEVER, IF THERE IS ONE FLAW IN WOMEN,

IT IS THAT THEY FORGET THEIR WORTH.

How true this can be. So many of our amazing girlfriends have come to me for guidance or counsel. Much of the time I find that they suffer from a low self-esteem and feel they have no talents, abilities, or gifts. Some have told me that they feel they have no purpose. Last weekend in his sermon, Jeff reminded us that our worth is NOT in anything we can offer to Jesus, but in what He gives us! I'm thankful that my worth comes from HIM!

Big Give - Big Success!

Following is an article we submitted to the Dixon Tribune:

The multipurpose room of Tremont Elementary was transformed into a wonderland of giving on Sunday afternoon, August 2nd. Living Hope Church of Dixon hosted their 2nd Annual Back-to-School Big Give, free of charge for all members of the community. “It’s no secret that the state of our economy is affecting families in Dixon.” says Pastor Jeff Myers. “Living Hope just wanted to help Dixon families in a practical way and this was the perfect fit”. With over 400 people in attendance, every school-age child received a free backpack of their choice, stocked full of school supplies to get the new school season started off right. Kids’ faces were all smiles as they opened their packs and sifted through the contents to find brightly colored markers, paper, scissors, and all the basics that make the new school year fun. Six hair technicians from the Paul Mitchell Academy in Sacramento volunteered their time to cut hair for any student who desired a new look this fall. Boys and girls alike were thrilled at the opportunity to show off their new styles. For some, this may be the only professional hair cut they receive this year. For an extra touch of security, the Yolo County Masonic Lodge conducted digital fingerprinting, complete with pictures of each child for parents’ records.
While parents appreciated the sensible gifts, their children expended their energy jumping in bounce-houses, working on a variety of crafts for all ages, and displaying an array of artistic face paint designs. Though some waited their turn for hair cuts or crafts, a booth full of homemade baked goods and occasional door prize give-aways helped the time pass quickly.

So how does the church pull it off? In addition to gifts from the congregants, Living Hope is quick to recognize partnerships with local businesses who donated financially to make the event possible. Jeannine Walser - Coldwell Banker Real Estate, DJ Hay Service, Mariani Nut Company, and JMLC Landscaping were among the top supporters.

When asked why Living Hope decided to make this a part of their annual calendar, Pastor Myers responded, “Backpacks and haircuts may not seem like much, but to a family who struggles to put food on the table, it can make the difference of getting through another week. Missions Moment

ALL GIRLFRIENDS ARE INVITED!Come join us this Saturday evening, July 11th at 7:00 p.m. for worship at Living Hope Church! This week, we have a very special treat. Our Missionary friend to Malaysia will join us in service. (In an effort to protect her family and their ministry, I won't mention her name in this post). She'll take a moment to give us an update on their family's ministry there.

Many of you were part of a creative gift-making effort for this special family. At our Girlfriends Getaway in April, we made beautiful family scrapbooks for 3 of the mission families that Living Hope Church supports.

BE THERE this Saturday evening as we present this scrapbook to our friend. I know she'll love the book, but even more, she'll LOVE the hugs and words of love and encouragement you can offer her in person.

Make plans now to join Living Hope Church at our 2nd Annual Back-to-School Big Give. Last year we gave away 300 back packs to needy school children in our community. This year, we hope to pack 400 bags full of school supplies and offer them to any child who attends, along with a hair cut, crafts, face painting, bounce houses, Bibles, a free meal, and more!

We need ALL our Girlfriends to volunteer at this event! Look for sign up sheets at our weekend services and pick an area where you can volunteer 30 minutes of your time! Areas of need include:

Kids Crafts
Registration
Back Pack Distribution
Bounce House supervision
Serving Pizza & Drinks
Hosting the Hair Cut station
Face Painting
Follow Up Visits to families who attend

Pray for Tamara Batta!

Tamara Batta has been in recent recovery from an extensive brain surgery to remove a tumor. She is currently back at the UCSF hospital. She was admitted last week because they thought some infection might be setting in where they did the brain surgery. No infection, but they've decided to go back in for another surgery to install a shunt that will help the fluid drain and keep pressure from building up. She's obviously upset that they need to do another surgery. She really needs our prayers right now for peace and she'll need our prayers this Wednesday , July 8th at 5pm while they do her surgery.

In addition, families are taking turns providing a meal for the Batta family at home. Her mother is in town helping to care for their son, Bryce. If you would like to help with this ministry, please conact me at ragamuffin_kids@yahoo.com.

Woman's Answer:
One!
ONLY ONE!!!! And do you know WHY? Because no one else in this house knows HOW to change a light bulb! They don't even know that the bulb is BURNED OUT!! They would sit in the dark for THREE DAYS before they figured it out.
And, once they figured it out, they wouldn't be able to find the dang light bulbs despite the fact that they've been in the SAME CABINET for the past 17 YEARS! But if they did, by some miracle, actually find them, 2 DAYS LATER, the chair they dragged to stand on to change theSTUPID light bulbwould STILL BE IN THE SAME SPOT!!!!! AND UNDERNEATH IT WOULD BE THE WRAPPER THE FREAKING LIGHT BULBS CAME IN!!! BECAUSE NO ONE EVER PICKS UP OR CARRIES OUT THE GARBAGE!!!! IT'S A WONDER WE HAVEN'T ALL SUFFOCATEDFROM THE PILES OF GARBAGE THAT ARE A FOOT DEEP THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE HOUSE!!
IT WOULD TAKE AN ARMY TO CLEAN THIS PLACE!AND DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON WHO CHANGES THE TOILET PAPER ROLL !!

Celebrate Your Father!

For some of us, it's easy to celebrate our fathers. Memories of a happy home, Godly values, and a safe place give us warm feelings. For others, memories of dad may be questionable with neglect, abuse, or no father at all in the picture.

Regardless - if you have put your faith and trust in Jesus, He is the father you can now depend on. Jesus is the father who will never neglect, abuse, or hurt. He's always there, waiting patiently to love us and help us through difficult times or bring joy to us in the good times.

Whether or not you choose to celebrate your "dad" today... take time to celebrate, thank, and show love to your heavenly father.

Why God Made Moms

Why did God make mothers?
1. She's the only one who knows where the scotch tape is.
2. Mostly to clean the house.
3. To help us out of there when we were getting born.
How did God make mothers?
1. He used dirt, just like for the rest of us.
2. Magic plus super powers and a lot of stirring.
3. God made my mom just the same like he made me. He just used bigger parts.
What ingredients are mothers made of?
1. God makes mothers out of clouds and angel hair and everything nice in the world and one dab of mean.
2. They had to get their start from men's bones. Then they mostly use string, I think.
Why did God give you your mother and not some other mom?
1. We're related.
2. God knew she likes me a lot more than other people's mom like me.
What kind of a little girl was your mom?
1. My mom has always been my mom and none of that other stuff.
2. I don't know because I wasn't there, but my guess would be pretty bossy.
3. They say she used to be nice.
What did mom need to know about dad before she married him?
1. His last name.
2. She had to know his background. Like is he a crook? Does he get drunk on beer?

1. My dad makes the best spaghetti in the world. And my mom eats a lot.
2. She got too old to do anything else with him.
3. My grandma says that mom didn't have her thinking cap on.

1. Mom doesn't want to be boss, but she has to because dad's such a goof ball.

What's the difference between moms and dads?
1. Moms work at work and work at home and dads just go to work at work.

3. Dads are taller and stronger, but moms have all the real power 'cause that's who you got to ask if you want to sleep over at your friends.
4. Moms have magic, they make you feel better without medicine.
What does your mom do in her spare time?
1. Mothers don't do spare time.
2. To hear her tell it, she pays bills all day long.
What would it take to make your mom perfect?
1. On the inside she's already perfect. Outside, I think some kind of plastic surgery.
2. Diet. You know, her hair. I'd diet, maybe blue.
If you could change one thing about your mom, what would it be?
1. She has this weird thing about me keeping my room clean. I'd get rid of that.
2. I'd make my mom smarter. Then she would know it was my sister who did it not me.
3. I would like for her to get rid of those invisible eyes on the back of her head.

Curves Cereal Fruit & Nut Bars Recipe

CURVES CEREAL FRUIT AND NUT BARS

Prep Time: 20 minutes

Start to finish: 50 minutes

4 cups Curves Honey Crunch cereal - or use the Fiber One

1 cup chopped mixed dried fruit or dried fruit bits (from 7-oz bag)

½ cup roasted unsalted sunflower seeds

½ cup dry-roasted peanuts

¾ cup packed brown sugar

½ cup corn syrup

¼ cup creamy peanut butter

1 tsp. vanilla

1. Coat a 9” x 9” pan with cooking spray. In a large bowl, mix cereal, dried fruit, sunflower seeds, and peanuts.

2. In a 2-qt. saucepan, mix sugar, corn syrup, and peanut butter. Heat to boiling over medium-high heat, stirring constantly. Boil and stir 1 minute. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.

3. Pour syrup over snack mix and toss to coat. Press firmly in pan. Cool completely, about 30 minutes. For bars, cut into 6 rows by 4 rows.

Per Bar: 150 calories, 3 g. protein, 25 g carbohydrate, 4.5 g fat, 0.5 g saturated fat, 0 mg cholesterol, 2 g fiber, 95mg sodium.

Substitution: Get creative and replace the dried fruit and seeds with different flavors. Try dried cranberries with pistachios or dried apricots with almonds.

Health Twist: Replacing saturated fats with unsaturated fats from nuts and seeds is good for your heart. But, fats are high in calories so keep portions small.

Scrapbook Love to the Khoury Family

At our Girlfriend's Getaway, we spent time making scrapbooks for three of our missionary families. Mimi Khoury received hers this week and sent us this sweet message.

I absolutely cried when I got the beautiful scrap book! That is the most thoughtful thing anyone has ever done for me. Thank you so much, thank the ladies from me and all of us. I leave tomorrow morning...really starting to miss the boys! (and Nabil, of course!)

Cell Phone Vs. Bible

Ever wonder what would happen if we treated our Bible like we treat our cell phone?

What if we carried it around in our purses or pockets?

What if we flipped through it several time a day?

What if we turned back to go get it if we forgot it?

What if we used it to receive messages from the text?

What if we treated it like we couldn't live without it?

What if we gave it to kids as gifts?

What if we used it when we traveled?

What if we used it in case of emergency?

This is something to make you go....hmm...where is my Bible? Oh, and one more thing. Unlike our cell phone, we don't have to worry about our Bible being disconnected because Jesus already paid the bill. Makes you stop and think "where are my priorities"? And no dropped calls!

Trust in the Lord and *ASAP (Always Say A Prayer).

Philippians 4:19 says, "My God will meet all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus."

How rich is God? Rich enough to cover all your needs and then some! He's generous enough to give forgiveness that we never deserved. He's the creator of the universe and owns all that is within it! He's merciful and willing to give us His provisions to meet all our needs - physical, emotional, and spiritual.

Wow....what a wonderful week I've seen since we were all together last week. It just doesn't seem the same.

My heart was sooo impacted by all of you ladies from living hope. I saw Jesus with skin on; I saw brokenness; I saw faith being borrowed and faith being shared. I saw women walking towards our Lord and I was brought into His presence in song; through His word and through the testimonies of other ladies. Thank you all for the profound experience of being in kingdom ministry alongside you.

May His blessing constantly amaze and profound you as he displays his miraculous personal presence with you all.

Princess Story

Hi ladies! One of our girlfriends who attended the breakfast last week had a great experience with her "Princess Letter" that we wrote during the speaker time. With her permission, I really wanted to share it with you... this is what she shared with me.

Hey! I have to tell you. You know the Once Upon a time.....princess story that we were to write at the breakfast? I didn't write anything that morning, but brought it home. Yesterday I sat down and wrote my story. Rich came into the room and asked what I was doing. He asked if he could read it. He loved it!! He wanted a copy and said that he wanted to keep it with him so that when he needed to hear something good he would read it. I never thought that it would mean so much to Rich. Well, he was in the story as my prince!! (Good thing we were getting along and I wrote good things about our relationship!) Ha! Thank you for the speaker and the great time that we had.

2. Do you have any brothers or sisters? I have two sisters Lynda and Sandy; and a brother Bill.

3. Where did you grow up? Fresno, Ca.

4. Are you married? Yes, to Gary Sutton for 36 years.

5. Do you have any kids or grand kids? A son Greg Sutton 35 years old, and daughter Melanie Harris 31 years old. Greg lives in Vacaville, Ca. with his wife Carol and their two children (my grandchildren) Tyler 5 yrs. old and Ashley 3 yrs. old. My daughter Melanie lives in San Ramon with her husband Tim.

6.Name a favorite thing about someone in your family. I would say watching my grandson Tyler explain something he has learned. He has such expression when he talks.

7. What is your current job? Homemaker.

8. What profession would you like to attempt? I've always wanted to be a professional dancer.

9.If you could have an endless supply of any food, what would you get? Kettle chips, lightly salted

and a Coke Icee.

12. What's your favorite thing to do in the summer? Swim, barbecue, play croquet, visit with family and friends around the pool and vacationing.

13. Are you a morning or night person? That depends on what is happening.....though I tend to lean towards morning rather than night.

14.What are your favorite hobbies? Listening to music, vacationing (there is that word again), crocheting , hanging out with friends, and a good workout.

15. What are your pet peeves? People who can't drive. Drivers who are unaware of other drivers on the road. It is dangerous.

16. What turns you on? I have two things. Music, and optimistic people who like to talk and laugh.

17. What turns you off? A job or project that is slopped together (half baked as the critics say).

18. Tell us about a unique or quirky habit of yours. I hum to the background music in stores while I'm shopping.

19.If you had to describe your self using three words, it would be ... Discerning, heartfelt and strong.

20.If I could be anybody besides myself, I would be... I actually like being me.

21. When, how, why did you start attending Living Hope? I started attending Living Hope on Sept. 2001. I learned of Living Hope through a flier on our doorstep. God lead me to Living Hope and I knew it was where He wanted me to be so I stayed.

Breakfast Success!

We had a terrific turnout at this month's Girlfriends Power Breakfast! With 29 women in attendance, we've grown by 11 since last month. Our speaker, Kristi Ent, shared an encouraging message about Jesus being our prince who "rescues" us from our difficult circumstances with the ultimate prize of heaven! In His eyes - we're all princesses! We enjoyed princess games, prizes, great food, and a mission challenge for the month. More details on the challenge to come soon!

Okay girlfriends - you know what to do!!

My friend Denise was a roommate of mine when I went with Biola College to Germany in 1973. We had reconnected in the past 13 years or so when I found that she lived only a few blocks from my in-laws in Medford, Oregon. Her husband is a believer but has been involved in some very addictive behavior over the past 15 years. She has 2 children who are far from the Lord in lifestyle and commitment. She also is an only child whose mom has Alzheimer'sand her 90+year old dad is not a believer. Lots of heavy issues. They just found out that her husband has both bone and prostate cancer. Please pray for her for strength and endurance for all that is ahead of them. Oh, and they have no insurance on him. This is the kind of thing that the Lord allows you to encounter to let you know that your life isn't so bad!! That is what the Lord is showing me!!!! Thanks for caring about my good friend Denise.

Hi girlfriends! I read a new book this past week and wanted to share it with you.

What's AGE Got to Do With It, by Robin McGraw (better known as Dr. Phil's wife), is a great read for any woman of any age. At the age of 55, Robin wants to share a few things she's learned about accepting her age and being the best she can be. Robin Includes 9 Chapters in this friendly-read, including What's AGE, FITNESS, NUTRITION, SKIN CARE, HORMONES, HAIR, MAKEUP, FASHION, AND FAITH got to do with it?

To be honest, my initial reaction to the title of this book was that I'm only 37 and this may not be a good fit for me and the current issues I'm facing as a woman. However, I was quickly drawn into the sincerity of her words that became a source of motivation for me to be my personal best at any age. I believe that this book is extremely appropriate for even younger women as well, since it gives incredible assistance in areas that all women deal with on a regular basis. In addition, it will help a younger woman prepare for what is to come one day soon. If we take care of ourselves and build good habits now, our "aging" process will be much easier to handle and more enjoyable for ourselves and those around us!

This book touches on a few areas that may seem frivolous in the real scheme of life. Robin consults with experts in the areas of skin care, make-up and fashion, as well as her own personal experiences and preferences in these areas. She takes time however, to show us how our outside self can be a reflection of our inside spirit. True beauty starts from within and if your inner-soul isn't at peace, your outside can reflect that. Further, small changes in these areas of our lives can help bolster our confidence as a women.

Most importantly, the last chapter, on faith, is inspirational as Robin shares her story of coming into a relationship with Jesus and how ultimately, this is where she finds her peace at any age. Without this basic foundation, nothing else matters. This book would be a great book to share with a girlfriend who doesn't know Christ!

Love In Its Purest Form

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres” (1 Corinthians 13:4 – 7).

As you go through this check list of the attributes of love, how is God speaking to you? Is this how you show love to your neighbors, friends, husband, children, co-workers? Regardless of how they treat you, how are you showing love, true love, pure love, to them?

If you're like me - there are many areas where you need work. Don't let it overwhelm you. Ask God to move in you and start making small changes today!

I received this email from one of our girlfriends, Liz, recently and wanted to share it with you. Great reminder for us all!

Sometimes I have mornings where I feel burdened by my job or personal finances, or I’ll feel trapped in an apartment, or overwhelmed with things I have to do... but I’m so blessed. So beyond blessed and it’s only my selfishness and sin telling me otherwise. Today at work, (if you don’t know… I work for a law firm that does foreclosures) – I foreclosed a “home” that just made my jaw drop… and it reminded me that I have no reason to ever complain.

Just thought I’d share a friendly reminder and encourage you all to remember how blessed we truly are…

The Refiner's Fire

Here's a great devotion that I received from Adrienne today! I loved it and thought I would pass it on.

Malachi 3:3 says:
'He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver.'

This verse puzzled some women in a Bible study and they wondered what this statement meant about the character and nature of God. One of the women offered to find out the process of refining silver and get back to the group at their next Bible Study.That week, the woman called a silversmith and made an appointment to watch him at work. She didn't mention anything about the reason for her interest beyond her curiosity about the process of refining Silver. As she watched the silversmith, he held a piece of silver over the fire and let it heat up. He explained that in refining silver, one needed to hold the silver in the middle of the fire where the flames were hottest as to burn away all the impurities.The woman thought about God holding us in such a hot spot; then she thought again about the verse that says: 'He sits as a refiner and purifier of silver.' She asked the silversmith if it was true that he had to sit there in front of the fire the whole time the silver was being refined.The man answered that yes, he not only had to sit there holding the silver, but he had to keep his eyes on the silver the entire time it was in the fire. If the silver was left a moment too long in the flames, it would be destroyed.The woman was silent for a moment. Then she asked the silversmith, 'How do you know when the silver is fully refined?' He smiled at her and answered, 'Oh, that's easy -- when I see my image in it.'

If today you are feeling the heat of the fire, remember that God has his eye on you and will keep watching you until He sees His image in you.

Walking In the Light

1 John 1:5-6 (The Message)
Walk in the Light. This, in essence, is the message we heard from Christ and are passing on to you: God is light, pure light; there's not a trace of darkness in him.
If we claim that we experience a shared life with him and continue to stumble around in the dark, we're obviously lying through our teeth—we're not living what we claim.

Wow! This doesn't leave much room to slip, does it? God's word is pretty clear. God is HOLY. If we're in a sincere relationship with Him, our lives should exhibit behavior that displays His holiness. Otherwise, we're hypocrites! One of the number one turn-offs for those who don't know Christ is when a "so-called" Christian acts just like the rest of the world. What's the point of becoming a Christian if there's no difference in your life from the lives of others?

What actions do friends, neighbors, and co-workers see in you every day that show evidence of you walking in the light? We're not just talking about telling your friend that you attend church. What do your friends actually see in YOU? Either it's pure light, or there is a hint of darkness. Attitude, character, benevolence, mercy, even when stakes are high and you've had a horrible day... these are the best opportunities to really show Christ to others.

It's a conscious effort to make choices that glorify God. Let's pray for each other that our girlfriends will show the light of Jesus in all that we do and truly walk in His light.

Missions Moment on Malaysia, Part 1

This week our focus is on Malaysia. Malaysia has two main geographical parts. The first half is located just south of Thailand. The second half is located on the island of Borneo and is separated by the South China Sea. The capital of Malaysia is Kuala Lampur. The official language of Malaysia is Malay. Other languages spoken in Malaysia are English, Chinese and Tamil as well as a variety of other dialects and tribal languages. The various people groups are as follows: Malay 50.4%, Chinese 23.7%, indigenous 11%, Indian 7.1%, others 7.8% (2004 est.) (CIA Factbook). Malaysia is a multi-religious society and Islam (60.4%) is the official religion. The other religions are Buddhist (19.2%), Christian (9.1%), Hindu (6.3%), Confucisim, Taoism and other Chinese religions (2.6%). (CIA Factbook)

Although the Malaysian constitution guarantees religious freedom, in practice the situation is restricted. If you are a Muslim, it is illegal to convert to another religion. If you are another religion you may convert to another religion (i.e. Buddhist to Christianity or Hindu to Buddhist). But if you convert to Islam, you may not convert back to your original religion. Also, all non-Muslims who marry a Muslim must convert to Islam. To be considered Malay, you must be Muslim. If you are, you will get economic benefits such as cheaper gas, easier access to jobs and education. The state will help finance the buildings for Mosques but are reluctant to give permission to other religions to build churches or temples and they certainly do not help financially to build them. Muslims follow the decisions of Syariah courts (Sharia law which is law based on the Koran) when it comes to matters concerning their religion which of course, causes problems when there are disputes with non-Muslims who have to also then abide by the Syariah courts. Naturally proslyethizing by other religions towards Muslims is not allowed which includes giving of tracts and Bibles.

Prayer Points:

That the Holy Spirit will prepare for a major work to be done in the hearts of the peoples of Malaysia.
That the Malay people will be set free from the restrictiveness of Islam both politically and spiritually.
That Christians will grow strong in their faith and hope in Jesus Christ and give loving witness to the great freedom and joy they have in Christ.

This quote isn't a Bible verse, but it speaks some Biblical truth. God calls us to be content in all circumstances. He won't give us more than we can handle, and there are lessons to be learned in any trial. Sometimes we need to accept things the way they are.

God also calls us to make a difference in our world. He commands us to take ACTION when we choose to follow Him; Christianity is not a spectator sport. EVERYONE is called to go, tell, and minister to people in every walk of life.

Paul pleaded for God to take the "thorn" from his flesh and give him relief. We don't know for sure what his thorn was. A difficult person? A persistent physical pain or condition? A need/want that he hoped to have fulfilled? Regardless, when it was not removed, He continued to serve Christ and do so with joy.

So for today, which will you choose? You notice that complaining, gossiping, and sulking are not options. What is God asking you to do now in your specific circumstance? Pray about it. Talk through it with a trusted Christian friend. He'll guide you to the right decision.

Pray for Michelle Crawford

Michelle Crawford, one of our dear girlfriends, emailed this request to me yesterday. She was able to attend our worship gatherings on a very regular basis until a diagnosis of diabetes brought incredibly difficult side effects to her physical condition. Now, in addition to the diabetes, there appear to be other problems. I know we have some prayer warriors, prayer ninjas, and everything in between at Living Hope. Our girlfriends care for each other and hold each other up before our Father, the ultimate Healer. I don't know any details other than her email below at this time, but will share them as soon as I do.

Please ask the church to pray for me. I know the power of God's People can move mountains. My body is in a living hell right now. The doctor's don't know what is wrong. They say I have a Neurological Movement Disorder.

Prayers for the New Year!

As we enter into our activities, parties, food, friends, and more for New Year's Eve - we'll no doubt take time to think through monumental events that have occurred over the past year. We'll probably look to the new year and find places where we can change, grow, and meet new goals and plans.

In addition to this important time of reflection and renewal, take a moment to pray. Ask God to guide the choices you make in the new year. Ask for a closer walk with Him and for specific steps you can take to ensure you make progress. Pray for your leaders in the new year - at church, work, home, and for our country as a whole. Pray for your Girlfriends at Living Hope that we would be a light to our communities and honor God with our efforts. Pray for a friend or acquaintance that God will provide you with an opportunity to lead them to Christ.

Pray for Charlene and Family

Hi girlfriends! Please continue to pray for our dear girlfriend, Charlene Haugen and her family as they mourn the death of her mother. As many of you know, the funeral was this past Saturday and reports from her tell us that the service was a beautiful celebration of her life. The burial is tomorrow (Monday) and after that, all family will be gone as Charlene is left to go through her mom's things and deal with her dad and other loose ends. Please keep Charlene in your prayers as the days ahead will continue to be difficult, I'm sure.

Post Holiday Blues

Family is gone - or you've gone home. Friends are getting back to the normal routine. Everyone is talking about diets, exercise, and all that they did or didn't accomplish last year. Couple that with the current economy and it can leave one feeling lonely, depressed, or with a feeling of hopelessness. "If this is all I could accomplish this year, what makes me think that next year will be any better?" It's very normal to experience post holiday blues.

The good news is that Christ wants so much more for us! He's called us into a life of joy that comes from a relationship with Him. The past doesn't matter... it's only a picture of what He's rescued us from. When we look to our future, it's our chance to dream and pray for the fullness of life He wants us to experience.

Colossians 3:1-4 tells us this (The Message):

So if you're serious about living this new resurrection life with Christ, act like it. Pursue the things over which Christ presides. Don't shuffle along, eyes to the ground, absorbed with the things right in front of you. Look up, and be alert to what is going on around Christ—that's where the action is. See things from his perspective.

Your old life is dead. Your new life, which is your real life—even though invisible to spectators—is with Christ in God. He is your life. When Christ (your real life, remember) shows up again on this earth, you'll show up, too—the real you, the glorious you. Meanwhile, be content with obscurity, like Christ.

What a blessing to know that whatever happened in our past, whether we chose it, or it chose us, is over! We have a new life in Him and a new year to begin again. Make it your goal to "set your mind on things above" and commit yourself to attending a Lifegroup, digging into God's Word, or starting up a mentorship with a woman of faith you trust.

Christmas Tea

This afternoon, our girlfriends gathered at the home of Simone Martin. Nancy Chuoonhaurai assisted with the food, and together, they presented a beautiful selection of teas, scones, quiches, pastries, fruit, and more! As wonderful as the food was, the conversation and time of sharing was even better.

We discussed the season of advent and our need to prepare ourselves spiritually for a true, Biblical celebration of Christ's birth. A time of prayer topped off the afternoon and encouraged each of us for this Christmas season.

Thanks to Simone for organizing this event and thanks to all the lovely ladies who found time to attend. We wish each of you a very Merry Christmas and pray that you'll take time to remember why we celebrate!

Invisible Mom!

Thanks for this email Therisa. I decided to share it with all our girlfriends.

It all began to make sense, the blank stares, the lack of response, the way one of the kids will walk into the room while I'm on the phone and ask to be taken to the store. Inside I'm thinking, 'Can't you see I'm on the phone?'

Obviously not; no one can see if I'm on the phone, or cooking, or sweeping the floor, or even standing on my head in the corner, because no one can see me at all. I'm invisible. The invisible Mom. Some days I am only a pair of hands, nothing more! Can you fix this? Can you tie this? Can you open this??

Some days I'm not a pair of hands; I'm not even a human being. I'm a clock to ask, 'What time is it?' I'm a satellite guide to answer, 'What number is the Disney Channel?' I'm a car to order, 'Right around 5:30, please.'

I was certain that these were the hands that once held books and the eyes that studied history and the mind that graduated summa cum laude -but now, they had disappeared into the peanut butter, never to be seen again. She's going, she's going, she's gone!?

One night, a group of us were having dinner, celebrating the return of a friend from England . Janice had just gotten back from a fabulous trip, and she was going on and on about the hotel she stayed in. I was sitting there, looking around at the others all put together so well. It was hard not to compare and feel sorry for myself. I was feeling pretty pathetic, when Janice turned to me with a beautifully wrapped package, and said, 'I brought you this.' It was a book on the great cathedrals of Europe . I wasn't exactly sure why she'd given it t o me until I read her inscription: 'To Charlotte , with admiration for the greatness of what you are building when no one sees.'

In the days ahead I would read - no, devour - the book. And I would discover what would become for me, four life-changing truths, after which I could pattern my work: No one can say who built the great cathedrals - we have no record of their names. These builders gave their whole lives for a work they would never see finished. They made great sacrifices and expected no credit. The passion of their building was fueled by their faith that the eyes of God saw everything.

A legendary story in the book told of a rich man who came to visit the cathedral while it was being built, and he saw a workman carving a tiny bird on the inside of a beam. He was puzzled and asked the man, 'Why are you spending so much time carving that bird into a beam that will be covered by the roof, No one will ever see it. And the workman replied, 'Because God sees.'

I closed the book, feeling the missing piece fall into place. It was almost as if I heard G od whispering to me, 'I see you, Charlotte. I see the sacrifices you make every day, even when no one around you does.

No act of kindness you've done, no sequin you've sewn on, no cupcake you've baked, is too small for me to notice and smile over. You are building a great cathedral, but you can't see right now what it will become. At times, my invisibility feels like an affliction. But it is not a disease that is erasing my life. It is the cure for the disease of my own self-centeredness. It is the antidote to my strong, stubborn pride.

I keep the right perspective when I see myself as a great builder. As one of the people who show up at a job that they will never see finished, to work on something that their name will never be on. The writer of the book went so far as to say that no cathedrals could ever be built in our lifetime because there are so few people willing to sacrifice to that degree.

When I really think about it, I don't want my son to tell the friend he's bringing home from college for Thanksgiving, 'My Mom gets up at 4 in the morning and bakes homemade pies, and then she hand bastes a turkey for 3 hours and presses all the linens for the table.' That would mean I'd built a shrine or a monument to myself. I just want him to want to come home. And then, if there is anything more to say to his friend, to add, 'You're gonna love it here.'

As mothers, we are building great cathedrals. We cannot be seen if we're doing it right. And one day, it is very possible that the world will marvel, not only at what we have built, but at the beauty that has been added to the world by the sacrifices of invisible women.

Great Job, MOM!

Fear Not Factor Christmas Musical

Living Hope KidzChurch put on a tremendous performance of Fear Not Factor this Sunday 12/14th! Grandparents, parents, friends, and church family totaled 181 people. Two months of hard work paid off as our kids sang their hearts out and celebrated Jesus' birth!

Our very own girlfriends, Jana Gittings and Luchie Millard were key elements to the success of this program with an amazing stage set (better than I ever could have imagined) and incredible coordination of rehearsals, lighting, back stage, props, costumes, and more! We also had many girlfriends who worked with our kids at home and in KidzChurch to help them with music, choreography, and speaking parts. What a team we have!

A CD of the performance is being edited and we'll get copies out as soon as possible. Thanks for everything you do ladies. The Kingdom is being changed forever because of your efforts. No doubt, Jesus is the reason for our season!

Missions Message - Papua New Guinea Part II

This week we will actually be able to introduce you to some missionaries that Living Hope supports. Unlike so many areas of the world, we can correspond freely with and tell you openly about Nate & Elizabeth Claasen. Elizabeth Claasen’s parents, Mary & Bill Reed were part of Living Hope Church for the first two years of our existence and now are worshipping at Valley Church in Vacaville where they live. Through them we were introduced to the Claasens and were able to see them prepare for the mission field. They are with New Tribes Missions and trained with them for several years taking Bible courses, learning how to learn a new language and then translate the Bible into a language which has no written language. The Claasens were also trained in how to live in a tribal setting (i.e. how to generate electricity, build a home, not get eaten alive by bugs, and general jungle living). Finally they were ready and last year Nate & Elizabeth Claasen left with their three small children and flew almost half way across the world to bring the good news to people in a culture very different from the one they left behind. The first year they were working in Madang which was a tropical setting. Now they are working in Lapilo which is in the mountains and has a much cooler climate. New Tribes Missions has asked them to work with missionary children who are boarding at the agency’s school because their education has become more than their parents out in the field can handle. Nate’s job is to teach these children math and science. This is such a difficult sacrifice for the missionary parents out in the field and it is extremely important for them to know their children are in good hands. Nate and Elizabeth are doing just that. I read something today that said your life is enriched if you are a risk taker--you'll experience joy, but you'll also experience tears.

Christmas Traditions and Memories

Christmas - what an amazing time of year! As a young child, toys and gifts seem to dominate our mindset. As we "grow up", hopefully we learn that this opportunity to celebrate Jesus' birthday offers so much more! I'm a total emotional person... an artist at heart. I love to be nostalgic and look back at memories and celebrations I had as a child with my family. Those memories inspire me to build meaningful traditions for my children as well. Growing up we would go to sleep early Christmas Eve & wake up midnight Christmas Day. That's when the celebrating seems best for us, eating tamales & ham, & thanking God for another year then opening presents. When we're through we go back to sleep, wake up then just hang out the rest of the day.

Missions Message - Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea (PNG)

Papua New Guinea is located just north of Australia. It is the eastern half of the island of New Guinea. The western half of the island is West Papua which is part of Indonesia and Muslim. Papua New Guinea, on the other hand, is considered tribal. PNG is right along the equator and is made up of high mountains, dense forests, lowland swamps and coral islands. There are about one thousand people groups speaking over eight hundred languages which makes PNG one of the most complex nations in the world. The economy is predominantly subsistence agricultural and fishing. The average income per year is $930. PNG gained independence in 1975 when it became a state in within the British Commonwealth. The nation is governed by a democratic parliamentary system. There is freedom of religion and almost every population has links to a Christian denomination but the old ethnic religions have a powerful influence and confuse what the true Christian faith is. Out of the 816 languages only 8 have the complete Bible translation. The New Testament has been translated into 150 languages. So there is still quite a bit of work to be done. Here are some prayer points:

Effective discipleship – many of the PNG church are confused and fear of witchcraft and evil spirits is widespread.

Lack of scriptures – there is a great need to translate scriptures into the many languages and to improve literacy.

Economic development – logging and mining have had such a great influence that there has been serious ecological damage and social unrest. Pray for wisdom for the leaders in how to best help its peoples.

As Living Hope wrapped up its Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Ministry for this year, please pray for those shoe boxes to bless the children they are going to. The great thing about this ministry is that it brings great joy to children who have so little and are often in desperate situations: war, refugee camps, famine stricken areas, and extreme poverty. Samaritan’s Purse is headed up by Franklin Graham, Billy Graham’s son and they do a wonderful job in making sure that not only is the shoebox given but that the children have an opportunity to meet the Giver of Gifts, Jesus Christ. They include a book presenting the gospel and often at the distribution of gifts have a program that presents children with the gospel through music, puppets or other outreach. Please pray that each child who receives a Living Hope shoebox will come to know Jesus Christ and feel loved this Christmas. Update on Prayer for Adrienne Silva

Hope all is well. I just wanted to check in and give you an update on my Dad. Thank you for all your prayers for our family and my Dad.

My Dad is currently in Intensive Care at a different Hospital now trying to clear up a relapse of an infection in his blood stream. He is now receiving Dialysis but is having trouble and needs another procedure done in his arm because the rest of his VAPS are Infected. He is walking now and will go to a Recovery Hospital that will prep him to go home when able. He's giving my poor Mom heck about going home, but she is staying strong and telling him he needs to be well first. I will see you all on Sunday I'm scheduled to work in the Nursery. Have a great Thanksgiving!

Nolan James Landis

Girlfriends of Living Hope want to welcome adorable little, Nolan James to our church!

Nolan was born last Saturday, Nov. 8th @ 4:47 p.m. He was taken by emergency C-section and weighed in at 3 lbs, 14 oz. Absolutely the tiniest baby I've ever seen! The picture we showed at church makes him look HUGE, but his sweet little head is just the size of a baseball. He was intibated for a while, then given a little extra help with oxygen. Alison gave me an update to pass along; "Nolan is doing great...he is on room air and yesterday got his first bottle...he only drank half but it's a step in the right direction...every little step is a step closer to coming home...we are making progress!"

Be in prayer for Amy Proctor today at 1:00 p.m. She has a 3rd interview at the cosmetology school where she will be teaching students in a live demonstration. Pray that God will give her clarity if this is a job she needs to accept.

Also pray for Adrienne Silva who is with her father in Las Vegas. Here is the prayer request in her words. "I got a call from my Mom that my Dad has decided to leave the hospital against Doctor’s pleading and begging. He is dying from kidney failure and I would love a prayer for peace and tranquility for him, and for him to find the loving arms of the Lord to guide him through his pain and suffering. Because of an infection in his blood he unable to receive Dialysis, so he will only make it another week or so. My Father’s name is Wolfango Mossimo Giunti - (June-T) ( so very Italian) his Birthday is this Friday he will be 78 years old he was born in Naples, Italy 1930."

Tis the season for pumpkins! Check out these awesome fall pumpkin recipes that Cindy found and wanted to share with our girlfriends! Thanks for passing them along. Enjoy!

Pumpkin Pancakes
2 eggs
1 c. milk
1/2 c. canned pumpkin
1 1/3 c. Bisquick
1 tbs. sugar
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg

Mix all ingredients well, and cook on hot griddle until golden brown.

Pumpkin Oatmeal Cookies
1/2 c. butter or margarine
1 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. sugar
1 c. canned pumpkin
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. cinnamon
3 c. rolled oats

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Beat together butter and sugars. Add pumpkin, eggs, and vanilla. Beat. Mix in flour, baking soda, and spices. Then stir in oats. Drop rounded tablespoons onto greased cookie sheet. Bake 10-12 minutes. Let cool.

Today I want to focus on a people group that our children learned about and prayed for this week in Kids Church, the Khamba people. They are a people group that live in Tibet and are part of the 10-40 window. Tibet is part of China and home of Mt. Everest. As many of us know, Tibet lost its temporary independence in 1950 when China invaded Tibet. Before that it was considered a theocratic Buddhist state. The Communists have sought to destroy the culture, religions and ethnic identity of the people. It is thought that perhaps 1 million people have lost their lives in resistance and a further 100,000 have been forced into exile including the Dalai Lama who is considered the political and spiritual leader of Tibetans.

Our children learned this week that they love horses and are known for their expert horsemanship. One unique pastime the Khamba (or Khampa depending on how you phonetically hear this people group's name) people have is yak racing. They are Lama Buddhist and are part of the red hat faction. According to Operation World, there is much demonic bondage and spirit appeasement. The Khamba people believe that they need to earn merit to gain access to heaven which can be done through saying certain prayers over and over again, doing good, and other methods to appease the spirits. In all of Tibet, only .2% are Christian, largely Catholic.

Prayer Points:

That the Khamba people will be released from spiritual bondage and become followers of Christ.

That the efforts going on through the Jesus Film, radio and personal evangelism will bear fruit and that many people will hear the Good News and believe.

That there will be a peaceful and just settlement for the political situation in Tibet.

Approval Seekers

Hi girlfriends! It's been WAY TOO LONG! I think our household has gone upside down - but we're getting back to "normal". I wanted to share with you from a devotion I read today.

Paul wrote to the people of Galatia about the gospel of Christ. He warns us that some will come along who try to preach something other than the TRUE Word of God. At times, it can sound so convincing, that we want to believe it. He warns us to be careful and only allow the truth that comes from God's Word to permeate our hearts. It wasn't easy for Paul to share this message. It was a hard truth that they needed to hear. In Galatians 1:20, he follows it up by asking, Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.

As women, it's easy to worry about what others think of us. Many times in my own life, concern for what others think has been so strong that it's driven me to make decisions that I wouldn't have made otherwise. (I'm not just talking about what to order from a menu or which color of blouse to buy). When our closest friends, family, and trusted acquaintances disagree with a direction we choose to take in life, it can be difficult. When this happens, will you be strong? Don't forget, it's the approval of GOD we seek, not that of those around us! As long as you're in the center of HIS will, nothing else matters. I encourage you to seek God's perfect plan for your life. Read His Word, pray often, and seek Godly counsel to make decisions that would be pleasing to Him.

Well Ladies, I thought since October is Pastor Appreciation month it would be a great time to focus our prayers on our pastor! He has the tremendous responsibility of shepherding the people of our church and he's doing a great job. Let's hold him before the Lord and ask God to give him the strength and wisdom he needs (as a pastor, husband & father), that God would bless him and anoint him, and that he would be encouraged. And if you get a chance, encourage him with an email or phone call letting him know how much you appreciate the job he's doing!

India’s Economy

I don’t know if we here in the United States can truly understand what poverty in a third world country really is like unless we have seen it and experienced it. I remember a friend in college who grew up in Mexico City and had witnessed it first hand who then decided to live in India for a year. He came back and said he had never seen anything like the desperation that he saw there.

“One-third of India's population (roughly equivalent to the entire population of the United States) lives below the poverty line and India is home to one-third of the world's poor people.

Though the middle class has gained from recent positive economic developments, India suffers from substantial poverty. According to the new World Bank's estimates on poverty based on 2005 data, India has 456 million people, 41.6% of its population, living below the new international poverty line of $1.25 (PPP) per day. The World Bank further estimates that 33% of the global poor now reside in India. Moreover, India also has 828 million people, or 75.6% of the population living below $2 a day, compared to 72.2% for Sub-Saharan Africa.

75% of the poor are in rural areas, most of them are daily wagers, self-employed householders and landless labourers. Although Indian economy has grown steadily over the last two decades, its growth has been uneven when comparing different social groups, economic groups, geographic regions, and rural and urban areas.” (Wikipedia)

Despite the overwhelming and daunting statistics, there are Christian ministries making some real economic differences to families and communities. One of the more promising strategies has been micro-financing. This means that people are given small loans with little or no interest to begin a small business to improve their economic situation. One of the most well known among Christian organizations is Opportunity International. They work world-wide. In India, they have over 34,000 active loans close to 5 million dollars. Another organization that works with families in India is HeartCraft. This organization helps persecuted Christians and local self-help groups by teaching them to learn new skills and have viable business platforms. HeartCraft then brings these products here to sell them. There are many other good ministries using this strategy of microfinancing to bring the hope of the gospel to a very desperate part of the world.

Prayer Points:

Christian Ministries such as the one mentioned above would flourish and really be able to bring both economic and spiritual help to the poor of India.

That our hearts would break for the poor and we would become generous in our giving towards the least of these….we would store up treasures in heaven rather than in our closets.

That India's poor would be loved by both the nationals and by the international community.

We have been getting little snapshots into the country of India these last few weeks. This week we are going to focus on the religions of India. This is the breakdown of religions in India: Hindu 80.5%, Muslim 13.4%, Christian 2.3%, Sikh 1.9%, other 1.8%, unspecified 0.1% (2001 census).

India has the largest number of Sikhs and the second largest number of Muslims in the world, next to Indonesia. In 1971 the Muslim population was 9.9%, which increased to 11.35 in 1981 and now it is claimed that India is more than 14% Muslim.

Although Islam is on the rise, as we can see the bulk of Indians see themselves as Hindu. It is the world's third largest religious system. But what does it mean to be Hindu? To be honest, it is very difficult for me to be able to synthesize it down to a couple of sentences. In fact, Indians would probably say a westerner could not do it. But, I will make some attempt to give us at least an idea.

Many people consider themselves Hindu simply because they live in or identify with India and its culture. As a religion, Hinduism is a wide system of thought with beliefs spanning monotheism, polytheism, panentheism, pantheism, monoism, and atheism. As you may realize, Hinduism is as diverse as its languages and peoples. Some tenents are that the goal of life is personal extinction in the impersonal oneness of all things. Man is in an endless cycle of reincarnation and suffering caused by past actions. To be released from this cycle of suffering and fate you need to be able to empty yourself by following a specific ritual or discipline.

One of the results of this religion has been the caste system. You are born into a caste because of your past life (good deeds/living in past life and you are in a higher caste, bad deeds/living and you are in a lower caste). Although caste discrimination is forbidden by the constitution it is still prevalent. These different castes function as a separate group because of the social barriers that separate them.

Although India has religous freedom, it is closed to missionaries from other countries. Indian missionaries, though, can travel to any part of the country and preach the Good News.

A Mother's Work Is Never Done

We'll - it's official! We voted, and it seems that our mothers had the most positive influence on us as we grew up. For some, a teacher, friend, or other mentor contributed, but for most, it was our mothers! If you're a mother, what are you doing to ensure that your influence is being used the way God would direct you?

Deuteronomy 6: 5-9 says, Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the door frames of your houses and on your gates.

As a mom, we never get a moment's rest. Everything we say and do, should be in the name of Jesus, teaching our children about Him every step of the way. It's a challenge, but one that is possible with God's helps.

Not a mom?!? That's okay. You're still called to love the Lord your God as this scripture instructs. And who knows? You may be the other person who influences someone more than their own mom. Take every opportunity to show a child the love of Christ.

A few words from our new, proud, grandma...

It's been a really long haul...2 weeks late, started inducing late Tuesday afternoon. About 33 hours of labor- drugs, epidural, water breaking, and fully dilating, our little angel decided it was just too tight a fit and refused to go on. Jessi had a C-section at about 1:30 am Thurs morn, and our grandson was born.

He is SO beautiful and alert and has quite a bit of hair! Jessi is doing amazingly well after all the last few days have brought.We are so thankful for all the prayers and concern, and now so thankful for a healthy baby and mom! See ya soon! - Colette

Of course, I had to "boast" and show off my opportunity to hold this precious little guy! What a beautiful baby! Wes and Jessi - GREAT JOB! We're so excited for you and the entire family!
